It's been several years since I've read them... but I do remember that Michael A. Stackpole's four books in the Star Wars 'Rogue Squadron' series had some of the most compelling dogfighting I had ever read. Granted, dogfights aren't true "chases" per se... but they do seem to share some similarities and cat 'n mouse detailing to the chase scene.

It really is shocking, and it's a good indication that the DM in question really has no idea what an RPG is. It's collaborative, not competitive. I have run campaigns where I told the players 'this is a very cruel, heartless game; I will kill all of you if you are foolish', but that's a slightly different thing. They came in with that understanding, and I did my best to make any player deaths as gruesome and memorable as possible. The players loved it and just kept making characters to feed into the grinder. We, however, were *working together* to make a game where lots of PCs died. It was fun.

These are absolutely true. Thank you. My husband met with some new players yesterday and two of them wanted tips on how to be a good DM. This list was a match to his! Especially telling them to not play the game determined to kill all the characters. It's sad how many DMs have that mind-set.

It can get really ridiculous. It gets worse the more deadly the game system. If you play 7th Sea, people play it loose, but if you play Shadowrun or Riddle of Steel, suddenly every single little detail becomes an argument.
